Obituary for Hugh T. Gormley
Hugh T. Gormley, the famous theatrical bartender at Jimmy Ray's for over three decades, died at the age of eighty-three on March 13, 2015 at home with his wife, actress Catherine Wolf (Blacklist, Oz, Little Children). He was born on October 4, 1931, in the parish of Our Lady of Refuge, in the Bronx.
He was a member of a group that dealt with addiction and served as a steadfast sponsor and guiding light for its members as well as whoever crossed his path in the following years. His widow Catherine Wolf marveled at the calls she received from all over the United States "Hugh changed my life", "Hugh was the kindest man I ever knew", "Hugh was a diamond in the rough. He helped me find a reason to live again."
The actor J.T. Walsh, so impressed by Hugh behind the bar, modeled his character in the movie Barfly after him.
A humble man, Hugh is survived by wife, Catherine, sister, Mary Gamble; nephew Eddie Gamble; nieces Theresa Gamble and Mary Ellen Francis as well as spouses and grand nieces and nephews.
His life will be celebrated on Friday, April 10, 2015 (3pm to 6pm) at St. Mary the Virgin Church, at 145 West 46th Street. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to St. Christopher's Inn Drug Addiction Treatment Center, 21 Franciscan Way, Garrison, NY 10524 or any one of the many Veteran organizations. -
