Obituary for John Chan

John  Chan
John Chan of Garfield, NJ passed into eternal life at the age of 90 on Monday, November 2, 2015, at the Villa Marie Claire.

Loving husband, father, grandfather and brother he is survived by his wife of 61 years, Pauline (nee Mazur) Chan; three children and devoted daughter and son-in-law’s; John M. Chan and his wife Toni (Correa) of Cary, NC; Donna Lengel and her husband Steve of Upper Saddle River, NJ; and Sharon Holle and her husband Rich also of Upper Saddle River, NJ. His oldest child, Emily Chan, predeceased him. He leaves behind 10 grandchildren that he adored and cherished; Jennifer (Chan) and her husband Landon Brock, Tiffany (Chan) and her husband John Gregory, Alicia Chan, Stephen Lengel, Brooke Holle, Paulina Lengel, Richie Holle, Mikayla Lengel, Bridget Holle and Nicholas Holle. He is also survived by his sisters and brother-in-law; Anna Chan, Susie (Chan) and her husband Walter Pitulej, Chris (Chan) Grand, his niece and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Helen, Mary and Anastasia.

Born in Liverpool, Ohio in 1925 his parents Andrew and Hanusia (nee Cimbala) Chan took him at the age of five along with his sisters back to their native Slovakia (Dubovnick) to live. Following WWII, he and his siblings came back to America. He began work soon after for The Okonite Company in Passaic, NJ and remained as a loyal employee for over 40 years until his retirement at the age of 65. He met his wife Pauline (also from Slovakia), and they married in 1954 at St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Passaic and settled in Garfield, where they raised their family and he resided until his death.

His love of family and animals, loyalty, strong work ethic and ability to fix just about anything will be sadly missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Service on Saturday beginning at 8:30 am from the Aloia Funeral Home, 180 Harrison Ave., Garfield, NJ and at 9:30 am for the Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Michael’s Cathedral, 96 First St., Passaic. Interment to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Saddle Brook. Visiting will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm with a 2:30 PM Panachida at the Aloia Funeral Home.
