Obituary for John Caravello

CARAVELLO, John, 84, of Garfield, died peacefully and quietly at home on November 12, 2015. He was born in Jersey City and resided in Lodi before settling in Garfield. He served our country in the Army during the Korean War, he belonged to the Catholic War Veterans of America and served as the New Jersey State Commander. He worshiped at Our Lady of Mount Virgin RC Church, Garfield, and was a member of the Holy Name Society, 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus, Usher Society, Feast Volunteer Staff, Lector for the Annual Mass of Remembrance, and a Cherished Chef to the St. Therese Children's Choir's Yearly Ziti Dinner. He was long-time member and Treasurer of the Garfield Chapter of UNICO, and member of the Hasbrouck Heights Elks, St. Ciro Society, Jewell AC, as well as Garfield Volunteer Fire Company 3 as its First Honorary Social Member. John loved decorating his house for the holidays, and always won the Garfield Chamber of Commerce Holiday House Decoration Contest. In addition, he loved to support the 20th Century Field bocce players on a daily basis. He owned and operated John's Shoe Repair Shop on Harrison Avenue, Lodi where he made hundreds of loyal friends before working for Tele-Measurements Inc. in Clifton. He was employed from 1990 to 2010 at the Aloia Funeral Home where we had the privilege of working with him. John is survived by his devoted wife and best friend, Alfonsa Frances (nee Amorelli), three sons, Vincent and wife Jeannine, Joseph and wife Halina , and John and wife Ellen, a brother, Richard and wife Roberta, and a sister, Carolyn Szabo and husband Dennis. Loving grandfather of Matthew, Katelyn, and Amanda who he just adored, dear uncle of 10 nieces and nephews, 12 great-nieces and great-nephews, 21 Godchildren, and his granddog Bella. John was "Mr. Garfield", well known and loved. Visiting Sunday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral is Monday, November 16, 2015, arriving at the Aloia Funeral Home at 10 am followed by a 11 am Mass of Resurection at Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church, Garfield. Interment St. Nicholas Cemetery, Lodi.. In lieu flowers donation can be made to Our Lady of Mt. Virgin Church, and the Garfield UNICO.
