Obituary for Rocco R. Chirico

Rocco R. Chirico
CHIRICO, Rocco R., a longtime resident of Garfield, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2016 at age 105½. Born in S. Alessio in Aspromonte, Calabria, Italy on October 11, 1910, he came to the United States with his family at 10 years of age and settled in Garfield.
While attending school in Garfield, he excelled in track and field having won many competitions. He held the record in Bergen County and was second in the state by running the half mile race in 2 minutes.
He became a proud U S citizen in 1936 and a lifelong democrat. He graduated John Marshall College in 1937 and was appointed to the U S Bar in 1940. He continued to practice law until his retirement in the 1990’s. During his law career, he served as attorney to such various city agencies as the Garfield Housing Authority and Board of Health. He also served as interim City Magistrate. He was known to friends and family as “the chief” or “the judge.”
During his retirement his favorite pastimes were tending his vegetable garden, reading the Record especially the editorials of Alfred Doblin, and learning about our solar system. His favorite television viewing was Judge Judy and, despite suffering from macular degeneration, tennis was his favorite sport to watch on TV. He enjoyed these hobbies until his passing.
He was predeceased by his sister and brothers. He was the cherished husband of the late Margaret Chirico who died in 2012.
He is survived by his three daughters Diana, Pamela (Robert) Bratt and Karen (Seth) Vogelstein. He is the cherished grandfather of Gabrielle Vogelstein.
It was Rocco’s expressed wish not to have a viewing. A memorial service is planned for a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Chirico family is in the care of the Aloia Funeral Home, 180 Harrison Ave., Garfield (973-340-7077). Condolences visit aloiafuneral.com
