Obituary for Robert Weldon Wright

Robert Weldon Wright
Robert W. Wright, 97, formerly of Princeton, NJ died Friday, February 3, 2017 at home in Teaneck, NJ surrounded by his loving family. Born in Newark, New Jersey on January 29, 1920 and raised in Princeton, Robert graduated from Princeton High School in 1939 where he excelled in track. He attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania before enlisting in the army during World War II. Robert fought with the 999th Field Artillery Battalion (Colored) from 1944 until the end of the war. When he returned home in 1946, he found employment in sales with Princeton’s Rockwood Dairy. Robert retired from the dairy in 1967.

In 1942, Robert married Emily Grace Miller. The union produced two sons, Robert Gunnar and Bruce McMarion. The couple moved to Cranbury, NJ where Robert established a small mink farm. In 1961, the family returned to the township of Princeton where they remained until his boys completed their secondary education. Their marriage ended after 35 years but they remained friends until her untimely death in 1988.

Robert loved to travel and he often took cruises with his companion of 25 years, Geraldine (Gerri) Burch. The pair settled in Willingboro and together took up photography and craft-making. Robert often received multiple awards for his photos, beautiful wooden chests and rocking horses.

After the death of Gerri, Robert moved north to Bergen County, living first in Midland Park and later in Teaneck with his oldest son Robert and family. Active in the photo and woodworking clubs in Teaneck, he continued his life-long learning in the arts. While in Teaneck, Robert also renewed his love for gardening, producing a bounty of vegetables, herbs and flowers.

At the age of 91, Robert decided to re-commit himself to the Lord and was baptized at Community Baptist Church of Englewood. He often arrived at the church at 6:30 am, poised to claim his seat, (and save seats for others), as he received the Word during the 8:00 am service. When his declining health no longer allowed him to attend the church services, he often watched online while enjoying his breakfast.

Son of the late Bruce and Alice Thigpen Wright, brother of the late Honorable Bruce McMarion Wright, and Juanita Wright Moss, he is survived by two sons Robert (Allison) and Pastor Bruce McMarion Wright II (Angela), 7 grandchildren Apryl Doyle (Ryan), Rebecca Veader (Paul), Jenifer Grace Wright, Tyler L. Wright, Bruce McMarion Wright III (Amanda), David Wright (Isioma) and Cooper M. Wright. He also leaves, nephews Jay Moss, Keith L.T. Wright (Susan), The Hon. Geoffrey D.S. Wright, Bruce C.T. Wright and Alexis Wright, 5 great-grandchildren as well as many cousins, friends and special friend Barbara Taffe.

A memorial service will be held at Community Baptist Church in Englewood, NJ on Saturday February 25, 2017 at 11:00 am. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to: Community Baptist Church, 224 First Street, Englewood, NJ 07631. http://www.cbcofe.org/contributions.php
