Charles "Chazz"  Zafonte
ZAFONTE, Charles "Chazz", age 84, a lifelong resident of Garfield, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side, on February 12, 2015. Chazz was born on February 2, 1931, to Joseph and Amelia (Torre) Zafonte in Passaic, N.J. He was married to the late Hannah Garippa who passed away in 1996. Hannah was his high school sweetheart and love of his life. Chazz attended US Army Meat & Dairy Hygiene School in Chicago, Illinois and he and Hannah very much enjoyed their months in Chicago together. Chazz proudly served in the US Army at the 121st Evac Hospital in Yongdong-Po, Korea during his service from 1951-1953. He was a member of Hawthorne Gospel Church, Hawthorne, a member of the Garfield VFW Post 2867, and worked hard all his life providing for his family. Chazz was preceded in death by his younger brother Angelo "Lutzie" Zafonte. He is survived by two sons, Todd (Meredith), and Jeffery, and three daughters, Lisa (Nick) Choman, Amy Zafonte, and Hannah (Douglas) Fisher. He is also survived by his cherished and adored grandchildren Dr. Brittney, Christie, Todd, Matthew, Nicole, and Nicholas, who were his pride and joy. He is also survived by his second family of sisters and brothers in law, and many nieces and nephews. Visiting Monday 4 to 8 pm. The funeral is Tuesday, February 17, 2015, meeting at Hawthorne Gospel Church, Hawthorne for a 9:30 visitation with the funeral service starting at 10 am. Interment Crest Haven Memorial Park, Clifton. In lieu of flowers the family is accepting donations for the HUMC John Theurer Cancer Center, and the National Brain Tumor Society. The Zafonte family is in the care of the Aloia Funeral Home, 180 Harrison Ave., Garfield (973-340-7077). Condolences/Directions visit aloiafuneral.com
