Obituary for Donald C. Couser

Donald C. Couser, age 60, peacefully passed away with his loving family at home on August 18, 2018. He was born on February 20, 1958 in Goshen, NY.
Don grew up in Midland Park, NJ and was active in the local Boy Scouts alongside his father. He attended Midland Park High School and Bergen County Vocational-Technical School graduating in 1976. In 1979, he started driving an equipment truck for Fantasia III Drum Corp. This is where he met his future wife, Liz, and they married in 1985. They lived for a short time in Butler, NJ before moving to Vernon Township in 1992 to raise their family. He worked for Hamburg Plumbing Supply for 25 years.
Since Boy Scouts was a passion of Don’s, he soon became his son’s Scout Master of Pack 404. He led the pack in pinewood derbies, camping trips and hiking adventures, showing the boys his love and respect for nature.
Later, Don began as an assistant coach in the Vernon Girls Softball League working his way toward becoming the president of the league for many years. Within the league, a goal of his was to form a travel team in the town, which was started in 2004. During his time there, he was the head coach of both of his daughters’ teams.
While living in Pleasant Valley Lake, Don started to run the annual horseshoe tournaments during their water carnivals which lasted for 15 years. After resigning from running the tournaments, his focus was to play shoes more frequently. In 2009, Don was involved in the Montville Horseshoe League for two years. At this point, he became extremely motivated to establish a horseshoe league closer to home.
In 2011, the Vernon Horseshoe League was formed. As the founder and president of a non-profit organization, he spent countless hours showing his craftsmanship abilities to build the horseshoe pits at Veteran’s Memorial Park, running tournaments, and organizing meetings. He soon adopted the slogan, “There are no strangers here, only friends you haven’t met yet.” During the years, the league grew in numbers which made Don both happy and proud to know that others, along with his family, had the same love of the game as he did. In recent weeks, the members of the league dedicated the horseshoe pits in Don’s name renaming them “The Don Couser Pits” showing their appreciation for all he had done for the league and its 100+ members. There is now a sign that is erected in his honor at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Vernon.
Throughout the years, he enjoyed the outdoors with his family going on camping vacations, going to the beach, fishing and hiking. Also, he had a love of American history and for his country. An American flag was, is now and always will be flown at his home.
He is predeceased by his parents Richard and Dorothy (nee Vriesema) Couser, and his brother Douglas Couser. He is survived by his wife of 33 years Elizabeth (nee Ciccarelli) Couser, and his children Christine Couser, Bradley Couser, and Abby Couser, his sister Doreen Lustig and her husband Barry of Richlands, NC, and his brother David Couser and his wife Alice of Newport, RI, nieces Karen, Cassandra and Allyson, nephew Jarrod, and great-nephew Landon.
A celebration of life service will be held on September 15, 2018, 12pm, at the Pleasant Valley Lake Country Club, 200 E. Shore Drive, Vernon, NJ 07462. Memorials can be left at GoFundMe.com/Couser
