Obituary for Leonard Otto VanderGroef

Leonard Otto Vander Groef, age 76, from Toms River, (formerly Clifton) NJ, passed peacefully while sleeping in his home on December 29, 2018. He was born May 1, 1942 in Hackensack, NJ. He was predeceased by his parents Elsa A (Dorpfeld) and Leonard Vander Groef. He was married to Celia M (Baron) on September 18, 1965, at St. Brendan’s RC Church in Clifton, NJ. He served in the Army as a Private in the 4th Bn, 14th Arty from 1965 to 1971. He was self-employed as a Shoe Repairman in West Caldwell, NJ, later worked at 3M for 15 years before he retired. He was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife, Celia, his beloved siblings, Bertha Kievit, Anne Bessell, Andrew, Trina Lenahan, Christine DeVries, brother in law and great friend, George Baron, and nephew,s Robert and James DuHaime.
He is survived by his loving daughter Denise and her husband Steve Caruth; Grandchildren, Autumn and Jasper Caruth, Michael DeRose, and Maura Caruth. He is also survived by his loving daughter Dawn Vander Groef, and granddaughter Caitlen as adopted by two loving parents, Jo and Greg. He is survived by a brother Alan, and a very large and loving family consisting of Sister and Brother in laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and more. Per his request, there will be no services but a celebration of life will be determined at a later date. In lieu of flowers, any memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society or The Mental Health Association. Special thanks to the staff at VNA of Central NJ Home care and Hospice and Gintas his live in aide .
