Mr. Gromek was like a second father to me and my little sister Kristy when we grew up. He was a gentle “giant” in my eyes. He teased me once, because I was always at his house, that he was going to add me to the income taxes. I was about 8 years old and not sure how to take that the first time, so I flipped the script and advised him to add us. It became our little joke whenever he’d return home from work and find that we were at the house all day with Robin & Tracy. He would laugh heartily and light up with a big smile and a twinkle in his eyes. He led the best singalongs at the piano (Neil Diamond was his favorite), sharing his gifts at many a New Year’s Eve around our family piano. He shuttled us to and from many rehearsals, treated us to movie nights, McDonald’s fries, and even family trips to Villa Roma.
Mr. Gromek spoke of his beautiful wife and daughters with pride and love. His eyes lit up whenever he spoke of them and later his adorable grandchildren. I admired the way Mrs. Gromek took care of him, always ready with his dinner on weeknights after a late day at the office. I knew he was so smart and a really hard worker and loved the appreciation he had for his wife. Their sweet relationship prepared me for the long hours my husband would eventually work in the field of accounting. A few years ago, I was blessed that he could join us for for Easter on a year when the girls were in Florida. I enjoyed his company, his great stories, and the chance to let him taste my lasagna. His seal of approval meant the world to this little girl, since he was married to the best cook!
Rest easy, Mr. Gromek. Thank you for your kindness, generosity and your fatherly influence. We will always remember you!
