Obituary for Alan "Al" Tani

TANI, Alan “Al”, age 69, of Garfield, died on December 27, 2021. Born in Passaic, he lived in Lodi five years and Clifton for 18 years settling in Garfield 46 years ago. Al was a mechanic by trade working 46 years with the NJ Department of Transportation in Lodi retiring in 2018 as the Regional Supervisor. Al was involved in the Garfield Community and was devoted to volunteering his time and talents. He was a volunteer fireman 10 years and their in house mechanic for the Garfield Fire Department - Company 5 serving as Chief Engineer, and he was a member of the NJ State Exempt Firemen’s Association. His love was coaching his children and was the Garfield Babe Ruth President for 26 years, State District Commissioner for Babe Ruth Baseball, a founding member of the Garfield Boys and Girls Club Coaches Association, and a lifelong coach for the Garfield Little League, Softball, and Jr. Boilermakers programs. Al is predeceased by his parents, Martin and Florence Tani. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Jackie (nee Gontarz), three children, Alan R. Tani, II and wife Rosa, Jason Tani and wife Rosanna, and Crystal Leja and husband Marcin, six grandchildren, Gabriella, Zachary, Aidan, Brady, Madeline, Justin, two brothers, Martin A. Tani and Robert Tani and wife Lori, eight nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. Visiting Wednesday 4 to 8 pm. The funeral is Thursday, December 30, 2021, arriving at the Aloia Funeral Home at 9:30 am followed by a 11 am mass at Our Lady of Mt. Virgin RC Church, Garfield. Private Cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers the family is accepting donations for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Tani family is in the care of the Aloia Funeral Home, 180 Harrison Ave., Garfield (973-340-7077).
