Obituary for Carol T. Buono (Fardin)

BUONO, Carol T. (nee Fardin), age 89, of Garfield, NJ peacefully passed away on March 16, 2023. Born in Passaic, Carol lived in Clifton for 22 years, settling in Garfield 67 years ago. Carol graduated from Clifton High School and then from St. Mary’s Hospital Nursing School, Passaic, in 1955. She was a dedicated Registered Nurse for over 38 years and retired in 1983 from Mountainside Hospital in Montclair. Carol was also a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Virgin RC Church, Garfield.

In her lifetime, she was many things to many people:
-Her dad's buddy and a bit of a dare devil, especially when brushing off as nothing a cut up leg from skating in a (too short) skirt on ice formed in the swamps of Delawanna;
-Then prom queen in high school, President of the Student Association in her final year of Nursing School (this after a major turn around compared to freshman year when she went AWOL when Aunt Rose offered to take her home...ha ha);
-Then wife and mother where she really hit her stride. She was an attentive mom and kept the house incredibly clean and operating efficiently, despite many sessions of seasonal arts and crafts with us. She was even a Girl Scout Leader for a period of time.
-Then came the aqua blue 1968 Chevy station wagon...biggest car on the planet which she maneuvered around town like it was a Fiat. That car opened a new world of exploration for mom and her girls and both grandmothers...shopping was always the number one activity followed by paper drives, shuttling nuns to various doctors appointments, visiting relatives, etc.
-Then...an offshoot of her shopping hobby, Mom had her 15 seconds of fame when interviewed by ABC TV at the Saddle Brook Mall on her opinion of double couponing. The titling of the screen when she was talking was "Carol Buono: Shopper". We still laugh about that to this day.
One more thing related to driving...when Mom could no longer drive herself, she amused us tremendously by calling out bad driving behavior on the part of others when we would drive her around.
-Then she and dad decided to build a house and her job was to select whatever options needed to be selected. Pouring over brochures for every little or big item became a full time job, providing a mix of enjoyment and stress. We recall her saying..."never again".
-Then she went back to nursing school for refresher courses to dive back into hospital nursing. The dining room became her study hall and she demonstrated tremendous discipline in studying while still being a full time mother... so we were all in school together at that time. She out-studied us for sure.
She enjoyed international travel and exploration with Dad often linked to his business trips with Becton Dickinson.

She also liked to putter about in the garden and shrub beds at home, caring for dainty flowers or vegetables that she planted and especially pulling weeds. She was the original weed wacker.
Her happiest chapter began when she became a grandmother. She loved tending to her beloved grandchildren... from birth right up into grammar school age. At the same time, she took care of her parents and then Dad post his first stroke in 2001. Mom was the consummate nurse and caregiver... completely selfless in every way.

She is predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years, Frank Sebastian in 2007, her parents, Roger and Henrietta (nee Pavan) Fardin, her sister, Evelyn Wescott and husband Ralph, her sister-in-law, Katherine “Babe” Buono, her in-laws Sebastian Buono and Katherine (Quentz) and her son-in-law, Philip Serio. Many Pavan and Fardin family relatives who referred to her as "Cookie" predeceased her as well.

She is survived by her three devoted daughters, Lisa C. Buono, Lora Buono-Tyler and husband Brian Tyler and Lynda Buono, two cherished grandchildren, Leah and husband Enoch Andoh and James Serio and wife Shaza, a great-grandson, Malakai Andoh, her dear brother and favorite person, Roger Fardin (Livia) and niece Lynn (Bart), and nephews Roger and Neil (Deanna). She is also survived by many friends, especially friends of her children who she grew to know and love over the years like her own: Bert, Pat, Paulette, Andrew, Lavinia and David, Karen, Sue Ellen, Rita, Donna and Robyn . Mom was able to manage through her long illness with grace and dignity due especially to the loving help of her caretakers Nino, Mireya, Nurse Mary, Maria, Tammy, Nona, and Ani and physical therapists Ileana and David.

Carol will ever be remembered and admired for unbounded kindness, and for her quiet and selfless demeanor, yet powerful impact on so many. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
