Obituary for Nellie Hetel (Gut)

Nellie  Hetel (Gut)
HETEL, Nellie (née Gut), age 99, a long time Garfield resident passed away surrounded by family on June 27, 2016. She was born in Passaic to Polish immigrants Antonina and Frank. She went to Holy Rosary School and Passaic High School. She met and married her husband, Frank, with whom she spent 26 wonderful years. They moved to Garfield where they raised their two children, Barbara and Roger.

Her first job was working in Macinernie's Handkerchief Factory in Passaic. During and after World War Two she worked as an inspector of B-29 engines at Curtis Wright in Wood-Ridge. She later worked at Kodak in Fairlawn and ended her work career at Liz Claiborne in Secaucus. She also worked for the Bergen County Board of Elections as a poll worker until she was 95.

Nellie was active in Garfield Fire Company 4 Women's Auxiliary for many years. She loved shopping, especially in New York City, and traveling. Together with her son she organized and ran monthly bus trips to Atlantic City to raise money for the Pulaski Parade Association of St. Stan's Church.

She is predeceased by her husband Frank (1968), her son Roger (2016), and three brothers Stanley, Eugene, and Thomas. She is survived by her daughter Barbara Zackaroff, and her grandson Greg Zackaroff and his wife Kim, her brother Robert Gut and his wife Florence, and many nieces and a nephew.

Visiting Wednesday 3 to 8 pm. The funeral is Thursday, June 30, 2016, arriving at the Aloia Funeral Home at 9 am followed by a 10 am mass at St. Stanislaus Kostka RC Church, Garfield. Interment St. Michael’s Cemetery, South Hackensack. Donations can be made to the Roger Hetel Memorial Scholarship Fund.
